Freedom’s Re-Invention

“Freedom is invented in relation to constraints,” mediated by events and in “cooperation” with forces seen and unseen. — Jessica Dore

The only way to continue imagining freedom is to expose the constraints.

Not every day, but I tend to ritualize pulling a tarot card as a means to invite insights from my subconscious. Today, I pulled the Devil card in response to “what is a message I am vesseling?” (yes not just container but ing)? The interpretation that first surfaced in my repertoire of knowing was its traditional interpretation, a feeling stuckness or chaining, which is to say to lack “movement” or to freeze. But in 2021 my fave Jessica Dore wrote about the Devil as potentially representing the notion of freedom not being an aspirational utopian material or abstract - isolated- place, independent of the structures and systems and the humans that uphold them (including ourselves). Her writing invited the possibility of constant and iterative imagination of freedom - as fluid within the cracks of structures, in accordance to events and in relationship with each other and with the ‘hidden’ energies of our Hope.

Today, perhaps more than ever, that is a message to vessel.
