María Rosa Brea, Ph.D.

    • What I (currently) believe - ideas/beliefs are dynamic and at the core of all we do and embody; interrogate those to get to know the world, others, and, especially, yourself

    • How I learn - podcasts, listening to articles, reading books, writing papers, teaching, talking/dialoguing

    • What I read - a bit of everything (history, critical studies, astrology, esoteric writings, philosophy, fiction, poetry, and personal stories) - I make meaning and knowledge from everything, hence my site’s name!

    • What I teach - courses and workshops for academics, students, teachers on topics related to bi-multilingualism, liberated languaging, reimagining beliefs of ‘good’ languaging, analysis of beliefs about language in children’s literature, language healing.

    • How I co-learn - grounded in Paulo Freire’s Critical Pedagogy, bits and pieces of Vygotsky’s social constructionism, Piaget’s schema theory, and leaning into Reggia Emilia inspired approach to ‘unhurry’ the self in the learning context.

    • The ways I language - speak, dream, write, and move my body in Spanglish, Spanish, and English, with my camera, and through poetry

    • My favorite thought - ‘variability is a feature in all humans/ languaging /learning, not a bug’ ;-)

  • I am a teacher-scholar in higher education. My work has been centered at the intersection of multilingualism and disability. My classroom and community collaborations focus on researching the impact of standardized linguistic ideologies (or beliefs of 'good' / competent communication) in speech-language practices, sustaining variability in languaging in the classroom, and co-envisioning a path for linguistic liberation through art.

My dedication to student-centered teaching, social justice activism, and community engagement have received multiple accolades. In 2015, I was selected for the University of South Florida's Provost Community Engaged Faculty Award. In 2020, I received the prestigious NYU Martin Luther King, Jr. Faculty Award. I am also the recipient of the 2021 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)'s Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs. And in 2022, I received the NYU Steinhardt Teaching Excellence Award.
