Welcome to my blog!
My passion for photography began with the birth of my daughter in 2005. The fleeting nature of life and time became evident as my little one transitioned from the generalist newborn to the social infant, to the word-learning and world-naming toddler, and into an expressive and insightful conversationalist.
My daughter marveled at seemingly ordinary moments and concepts and those moments taught me the indispensable need to focus on enjoying the gift of presence. This is what I set out to co-build with the families I photographed…the gift of a moment in their present. After 15 years retelling moments visually - providing people with time encapsulated, I retired my camera.
My family and I relocated from the ‘sunny’ state of the US (Florida) where I regularly connected to nature about me, to the land of innovative human engineering and architecture - NYC. The demands of a new position took me down a different learning journey and photography as ‘a business’ ceded its space. Fortunately, my learning to ‘observe’ and ‘perceive’ stayed with me… now I mostly carry my trusty cell phone around the city, only dusting off the old DSLR to capture my daughter’s big moments and our visits to be among the trees again…when time (the limited kind we think we manipulate) has allowed.
While my photographic journey saw its beginning within the genre of studio portraiture, I conducted a great majority of my portrait sessions in natural light. I believe that the exceptional beauty of nature provides an ideal backdrop for emotions to surface, the kind of emotions that leave a long-lasting scent of how we felt in that moment captured.
I have an affair with the sun and its light; I adore sunrises and sunsets and I'm known for pulling over to the side of the road, and now open the window of my apartment, to take in the majestic ball of fire as it welcomes and says its good-byes marking the hours and days. I am equally fascinated by the rhythm of rain, snow, and the fluidity of puddles, the shells in the sand and the golden leaves carpeting the ground in autumn, owls, cardinals, and the gentleness of petals…all an ode to the vibrations that hold us whole…much like mothers and daughter, fathers and sons, sisters, brothers, and best friends. I am equally tickled by babies and giggles and music, lightning bugs, and a soft breeze are in the same way inspiring to me.
